Final Crit://

I aimed to get all 5 roughly completed for the crit as there is still the DVD interface to work on, but have failed by a long way! Nevertheless, below are the 3 closest to finishing/ complete but are open for suggestions and feedback.

Best viewed on full screen!

God of Cookery 04 from Tim Wan on Vimeo.

God of Gamblers 03 from Tim Wan on Vimeo.

King of Comedy 05 from Tim Wan on Vimeo.

FIVE questions I would like to ask://

01/ Audio - incorporate original audio from film which would syncronize with subtitles, have no audio or simple sound effects?
02/ Do the current idents work? - Is concept/ design direction clear from my idents + support work?
03/ Does the concept justify the simplicity of some of my idents? ( ie should I work more on the visuals or are my ideas communicated well enough and I shouldn't overcomplicate it)
04/ Does my blog seem to represent my ongoing investigation/ development or are there significant areas that are absent and needs addressing?
05/What do you think of my choice of colour and type? Are they appropriate as a set etc?

  1. You seem to have got a good hold on your problem analysis, and have kept to your specified tone of voice throughout. Target audience seems a bit vague, could it of been more specified in terms of age? We feel the style of your idents are heading towards a more younger generation.

You've got some great background information on Stephen Chow, along with some great footage of the films he's involved with. We can't see any research into film 4. Have you taken their style into consideration? Your general annotation on your posts is good, though you could be more specific with what exactly you like about them and how they influence you/your work.

You've researched into a lot of animations, but there are very few in the style of your idents.

There seems to be quite a large jump from your storyboards to your animations, but I think this is because you've uploaded them as a PDF. It would be nice to be able to see all your development work at once, instead of navigating from page to page. Put up your A6 storyboards, it will help show your development towards your final idents. Your storyboards show good development but what about experiments into colours and digital imagery? Have these come from the films? Why have you used them?

The subtitles are working well, but could you experiment with some sort of imagery behind the text? Is there a reason you haven't? Is that how it is in the films? Maybe you could show some research into subtitles, though I know there's not much to look into.

Other than your schematic, there's not much at all in terms of your DVD menu. 'Eyeframe service' is a good site for DVD menus.

All of your idents are working really well, and have each got that unique edge that relates to the films. We feel the audio from the film over the subtitles (voice over) works well, but maybe keep the animations sound free.

Everything is coming together really well and we can't wait to see your finals. Good work :)
