What is good? Part 1 / Research & Concept

After many idea bashing sessions on 'What is Good?', I finally narrowed things down to the last 6 most potential concepts;

- Ninjas
- Unwrapping/ unpacking new things
-
-
-
-

and finally make a commitment on Ninjas. I decided on this because it seemed to be quite an unusual subject to work on as it doesn't have a personal relevance. I think I was rather intrigued by our ideology of ninjas and how this has been influenced from popular culture. The idea of a secretive society seemed like quite a fun part of this concept aswell as there is no reason why they don't exist in our societies today, which put's the subject matter in a current context.

The brief's requirements include having a strong opinion backed up with relevant primary and secondary research that would be presented back to the group in a 2-5 minutes presentation format along with a clear concept statement.

In accordance to the brief, the things I planned to look into include :

- The history of the ninja, where they originate from, where the name ninja derives from and what their objectives were etc.
- What are they? Who can become a ninja? Is the the cultural traditions, lifestyle and the training that makes them a ninja or is it simply the look and equipment they carry that gives them this status?
- What are people's idea of a ninja?
- Where people's ideology's of a ninja come/ influenced from?
- Their morals
- Equipment, clothings etc

Summer Postcards

Mandatory Requirements:
To show the ability to understand basic colour systems by re- interpreting a variety of source material.

One of the main highlights of my summer was my first visit to New York City, one of the most documented period of my summer was during the 10 days I spent in the city. Therefore the focus on the visuals and subject matter based on my photos and imagery collected from the trip was an interesting and beneficial decision.

1 Colour Pictogram of taking photos
The majority of my research was documented through photography, which played a big role in my research, therefore I decided to dedicate the pictogram to this 'activity'.

A Word, 3 Colour Max
Again, working around the subject of America, I chose the word Dollar. I experimented with overlaying colour to form a 4th colour, certain results for much bolder than others, but ended up with this one, where the bold type is complimented with a nice outline of colours.

Full colour image
These newspaper boxes are a common sight in NY, but seemed quite bizarre to start with. I chose this image as it reflected the subtle characteristics of the big apple while demonstrating a nice spectrum of colours.

2 Colour Logo
Based on the Popeye's Chicken & Biscuit logo, I experimented with different colour varations, before finalising with this simple/ bold colour combination, intended to be printed white stock.

3 Weeks Internship at HK Magazine - Hong Kong

Every summer for the past 3 years I have managed to take a few weeks and saved up for a trip to Hong Kong. This year hasn't changed, except for an opportunity to work as an intern for Asia City Publishing, which is a company that specializes 'in providing city living and lifestyle content and marketing solutions' in Asia.

Being the first to pioneer the idea of free distribution publications in Asia, one of their main products was HK Magazine - a free weekly english magazine in Hong Kong that offers discussions on social issues as well as entertainment, music and restaurant listings and recommendations on the latest trends.

During the 3 weeks, I was put into the position of a Graphic Design intern in the production team who were in charge of Hk Magazine. The work varied from editorial design to idea generation. Some examples of work produced during my stay there://

The first task that I was assigned:- draw the map of Hong Kong island that would be considered to be used for a new brochure aimed at tourists to Hong Kong. I've never really drawn maps before so this was pretty new to me. It wasn't too hard, just tedious and required so much patience! The only difficult thing was researching and deciding which roads to emphasise more and which ones to just ignore. The colour scheme was also quite frustrating, I was told to come up with a new colour swatch that they would use for all their maps in the future, the tricky thing was that it needed to fit in with the prototype brochure, which restricted the designs. Anyway, these maps took me AGES, but looked pretty good in the end i guess.

Some visuals on idea generation for a a re-brand on another magazine called The List - a free monthly publication aimed at the female population.

Illustration for 796th issue of HK Magazine://
During the 2nd week of my internship, I was assigned to come up with ideas and visuals to respond to a piece of text that was titled 'Hong Kong Fairytale'. I found the task rather broad to start with as I could have done anything for it. They had no specification to start with other than the fact that it needed to have a 'cute' look to it and that it visually reflected the text. I therefore decided on working with bold shapes and colours on Adobe Illustrator. In comparison to the work done at college, this was rather challenging in a way that it has been a long time since I had to design something simply for it's aesthetics. I came up with the final illustration anyway, and was quite chuffed that it had been published in one of their issues. Although it doesn't really flow with my usual work, it was still a change and quite fun to work on, until I got told to alter almost everything about it, which was quite frustrating and gave me an insight of designing under a team of people rather than for yourself.

Anyway, final full colour print on an A2 slide on news print://

A 32 Page Book design

Revised version

Over the summer, I have been collecing small bits of information from business cards found in the streets of New York to the text messages that I have received during a quiet night in.

I decided to create a book to develop my understanding on editorial design, focusing the subject on my 10 days in New York as this was a highlight of my summer. As well as this, I had collected and recorded a good amount of information and photos that would act as the starting point of my book.

What I survived on for 10 days

Panoramic Shots

View from L Hostels where I stayed during my trip. Highly recommended!!!

View from Empire State building! Was a bit of a wait to get up there, but was well worth the wait! Stayed there for hours!

View looking across the lake in Central park.

Typography in New York

Some interesting discoveries on typography during my New York adventure!

A rather amazing display of typography created with a row of 5 planes flying paralleled against each other.
